MBABANE – Prime Minister Sibusiso Dlamini has revealed that civil servants were prohibited from gambling.

Dlamini said, even though he could not recall the title of the law, there was legislation in place that prevented government employees from taking part in gambling activities. He said the law was enacted with the intention to assist and not deprive civil servants.

“Every employer doesn’t want his workers to fall to the temptation of gambling as it is very addictive. That’s why this law was enacted. Even other employers don’t want their employees to be gambling addicts,” said Dlamini.
He was speaking to the Swaziland Editors’ Forum yesterday morning while informing them that government was concerned about the current gambling trends, which he said have necessitated the reviewing of existing legislation governing the industry.

Times Managing Editor Martin Dlamini expressed unease at government’s stance and pointed out that this move might antagonise business people. However, the premier was unwavering in his resolve.

“If we need to sacrifice three or four companies for the economic well-being of the country and the moral fibre of the nation, then so be it. We are protecting our children and fellow citizens with this move,” Dlamini said.
He said the aim was achieving moderation in gambling.
