MANZINI – Hub giants, Manzini Wanderers might be the only team still to suffer defeat in the MTN league but coach, Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati is still under immense pressure barely three months in charge, the Times Sports Desk can reveal.

Vilakati, according to a well placed source in the team, indicated to one of the club’s influential directors that he contemplated stepping down but later changed his mind.

However, the club had already come up with Plan B in the form of former captain and assistant coach, Jerry ‘Mbazo’ Gamedze, who was set to begin drilling the ‘Weslians’ last night. Gamedze, who has been linked with the coaching job at Hub Sundowns, even attended the team’s training session held at the Trade Fair grounds yesterday.

"Mbazo made it clear he could not take over a job while there was still a coach in charge. So Koki continues to be the coach but the MC has brought in an assistant coach," our source said.

The bone of contention, this newspaper gathered was that the long time Vilakati had taken to have an assistant coach after the sacking of Nyanga ‘Crooks’ Hlophe, who made his way back to Mbabane Swallows.

Women’s national soccer team alias ‘Sitsebe’ and Wanderers ladies team head coach, Cristian Thwala has been recommended as assistant coach to Vilakati and began his duties on Monday.

When reached for comment, Vilakati referred all comments to the team’s spokesperson, Vuyile Dlamini, who said he was not aware of the latest developments save to confirm the appointment of Thwala as Vilakati’s assistant.

"The appointment of the assistant coach was discussed in our meeting and was introduced to the team on Monday. On the reports that he wanted to quit, I think it would be too soon as he has just joined the club," Dlamini said.

Gamedze confirmed that he had been approached by Wanderers to take over the head coach position.

"The directors indicated they had a few issues they needed to iron out with Koki and asked me to hold fort. I think as it is they managed to solve those issues with Vilakati but I was only going to come in and assist. As coaches we needed to assist each other, not to stab each other in the back," he said.

The ‘Weslians’ lie in sixth position on the log with 11 points in seven games after winning two games and playing five draws.
