She is a former St. Marks High
School pupil and completed her
education in 2006. She is currently making waves on our local radio broadcast station SBIS where she is attached to SBIS-2 FM, other wise known as the English Channel.

Her name is Nomvuyo Vilakati, a 21-year-old young woman who is originally from Motshane but currently resides at Thembelihle, Mbabane. Many know her as the girl behind the voice of the female that co-hosts the breakfast show with Mbuso Ntshingila and many listeners have not seen her but they already love her because of the entertaining music she plays. She is not yet qualified but she is working towards a qualification in Media Studies at Bolton Business College.

She might be pretty but she is a self-confessed tomboy and prefers sneakers than high healed shoes. STYLE introduces to the nation, this young and gorgeous girl who says she loves radio:

STYLE: When did you join SBIS?

NOMVUYO: I joined the station about two months ago.

STYLE: Do you have any experience in radio broadcast?

NOMVUYO: Actually no. I am currently doing Media Studies at Boston Business College.

STYLE: Did you see yourself being on radio earlier in your life?

NOMVUYO: Media has always been my passion, it is my first love. When I was at school, one of my teachers advised me to study Medicine because I am very good in Math. However, I decided against it and went for media instead and I love it.

STYLE: So how did you get to work on radio?

NOMVUYO: (laughing)...This is actually a long and funny story. Since I am doing media-related studies, I wanted to find out which field would best suit me between radio and television but I decided to go for radio first. I approached the station’s boss, Percy Simelane, and told him about my wish to learn the ropes. Fortunately, I was put through a trial, some sort of an audition and I came out tops, which is why I am here. I had actually asked Lindelwa Mafa

STYLE: How do you find the experience so far?

NOMVUYO: Oh... It is brilliant and I love every minute of it. I love the fact that it is live as it puts pressure on me to always be on point which is good because I am a perfectionist and I do not like making mistakes. I also like reading the news.

STYLE: When are you on radio?

NOMVUYO: I am there six times a week. I work with Mbuso and we co-present his breakfast show together so I am there daily from 5am to 10am as I also do continuity presenting after which I then help out with some other stuff just to learn the ropes. I also do the ‘Chill Sessions’ on Sundays.

STYLE: What have you learnt so far?

NOMVUYO: I have learnt to always be on my toes and not relax. Radio has also taught me to be more articulate and precise, especially when reading the news as it requires such qualities. I have also learnt how to conduct an interview as we interview people during the breakfast show.

STYLE: Do you have any project of your own that you are currently working on?

NOMVUYO: Actually I do. I am currently working on a new programme that will air soon with the Swaziland National Youth Council (SNYC). I will co-present it with Mimi from the SNYC and it will be a youth-oriented programme. It will be a call-in programme where we interact directly with our listeners and discuss topics on key and relevant issues affecting the youth such as Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS. We will also keep the youth updated about newly released music and celebrity gossip. It has no name yet and will be run for two weeks after which the listeners will then suggest a suitable name for it. The programme will start airing as of next week and will be on radio every Wednesday starting from 4pm to 5pm.

STYLE: People like you because they enjoy the music you play. How do you keep up with what is new in the music scene?

NOMVUYO: I rely mainly on the internet but my mother inspires my old school knowledge which I play during the ‘Sunday Chill Sessions’ as they always play this kind of music during family get-togethers.

STYLE: Which radio personality do you look up to and why?

NOMVUYO: I like different people for various reasons. I like Lindelwa ‘Lindz’ Mafa because of her knowledge when it comes to Hip hop music, I look up to Thembi ‘Billy Jean’ Hlophe for her experience and I like Mbuso because he has taught me most of what I know since I have been attached to his show ever since I was there.

STYLE: For how long do you see yourself staying on radio?

NOMVUYO: For as long as I still love it but I would also love to explore other media options as well.

STYLE: You look very young for age, is that what you get from most people when they meet you for the first time?

NOMVUYO: No. One misconception people have about me is that I am stuck-up, which is wrong because I am the nicest person you will ever meet.
