KWALUSENI – The entertainment organising committee from the University of Swaziland has revealed that they exceeded their budget during the Intervarsity Games last week.

Although declining to give the actual figures, the committee admitted that the excess was so high that they asked the institution’s administration to bail them out of their debts.

Sihle Ngidi, one of the committee members said, “We have made a great loss, and have learnt from our mistakes but are grateful to our sponsors, MTN, PSI, Great Success hair salon, Honey Jewellers and all other stakeholders who made this event a memorable one. The overall event went well except for incidences such as the stabbing of Bhekithemba Dlamini (a student) and other minor scuffles which were witnessed.”

Ngidi said one thing that really got to them was the disagreement with Swaziboy Entertainment whom they had roped in to assist them with entertainment for the duration of the games. She said in future they will “Definitely explore other entertainment stables and agents to work with”.

Unfortunate

“Some artists have still not been paid, but we have asked the university to help us out. Even the MCs of the Mr and Miss intervarsity competition, Lando Dlamini and Mduduzi ‘Lokza’ Lokotfwako, have also not been paid yet. We hope they can issue out a cheque before the end of this week,” she added.
She further said it was unfortunate that as a committee they did not have enough time to prepare for the shows, hence the many hiccups. She said they had also learnt that it would be much better in future to hold their shows within the university premises.

“We had hoped to use the gate takings to settle the rest of our debts but it seems they were not enough. We are very grateful to the university for bailing us out.
“We cannot really reveal how much we made as some of the money was taken straight from the gates and used to pay for unplanned expenses,” said Ngidi.

She highlighted that their main objective was not about making profit but to ensure that their guests and locals had a wonderful and safe time.
Meanwhile, Banele Gamedze, the university’s Minister of entertainment, said they were very happy about the success of the show. He said: “We think we did well. We would like to thank everyone for their support and we apologise if we stepped on anyone’s toes.”
