MBABANE – A Mbabane-based police officer has stood as surety for the
Bangladesh national, who allegedly killed his countryman at Parkview Heights
Flats in 2019.
This was after Acting Judge Fikile Nhlabatsi granted Delawai Gazi bail amounting
to E50 000. He was ordered to pay E20 000 in cash and the balance to be in the
form of sureties, and the police officer provided a VW Jetta as surety for the
release of Gazi. The High Court went on to issue a warrant of arrest for two
witnesses who, according to the acting judge, are either refusing or avoiding to
come to court. Gazi, who was 28 years old in 2019 when the offence was
committed, is also accused of robbing the deceased, Sawar Hossain. The first
count, according to the charge sheet, states that on March 28, 2019 at Mbabane
Parkview Heights Flats, he allegedly hit Hossain with a dumb-bell once on the
head, inflicting a fatal wound.
In the second count, the accused person was charged with robbery. He allegedly
stole from Hossain items valued at E19 000. The stolen items were a black
Samsung J7 cellphone valued at E3 500 and a black Samsung S+8 cellphone valued
at E15 500. According to the summary of evidence, the Crown will lead 11
witnesses. The summary of evidence states that one of the witnesses saw Hossain
lying in a pool of blood in his flat, which was locked. The witness peeped
through a window after receiving information that the deceased’s car remained
in the parking lot and the flat was locked. Another witness allegedly received
blood-stained bank notes from Gazi when he sold a cellphone to him. He informed
some of his countrymen about the bloodstains on the money before handing it over
to the police. Acting Judge Nhlabatsi postponed the trial to next Tuesday.
