BY PHIWASE PHUNGWAYO on 01/02/2019 03:06:00 MBABANE – A man was charged for his ‘unusual’ fashion sense. Mbuyave Maziya (24) of Mankayane was on Wednesday charged with contravening the Urban Areas Act. “I was in town on my way back home from accompanying my mother to the bus station, when a policewoman called me. I was wearing my sagged shorts and vest and the officer demanded that I pull my pants up,” said Maziya. He further narrated that he immediately left the policewoman after she had told him that a charge would be laid against him. Confrontation Maziya explained that the reason he left after the cop’s order was that he didnt think he had done anything wrong as he was a young man who expressed himself through his fashion sense and music since he was also a rapper. Maziya mentioned that he was shocked when he was later called by the policewoman on his personal mobile number. He claimed to have no idea where and how the police officer got hold of his mobile number. Maziya further mentioned that the policewoman ordered him to report to the Mankayane Police Station. When he got there, she stated that he was charged with contravening the Urban Areas Act of 1965. Unacceptable When queried about his understanding of the Act, Maziya said he was not aware of it although he pointed out that he was conscious that part of it may have to do with wearing clothes that were unacceptable in society. The young man was taken to Mankayane National Court, where his case was heard. He was found guilty of contravening the Act and was sentenced to five months imprisonment with a fine option of E500.
