MBABANE – His Majesty’s Correctional Services Choir was the overall winner for all the major choral music competitions held this year.

This includes the Standard Bank Choral music competition and the recent Ntjilo-Ntjilo Festival. The Ntjilo-Ntjilo Festival highlighted an important milestone which is the partnership between the National Choral Music Association and Ntjilo-Ntjilo Festival. This was mentioned by the Minister of Sport, Culture, and Youth Affairs representative, Owen Nxumalo during the Ntjilo-Ntjilo in collaboration with Tiro Mpane Foundation Choral Music Competitions. ”Such collaborations give us confidence that we are headed for greater excitement than before.
“Our mandate as the ministry is to recognise and celebrate regional histories and cultures in which the competition’s compositions should embrace,” he said. Nxumalo went on to mention that Ntjilo Ntjilo strives to identify raw talent from the regions in all art codes, to nurture and develop them into national icons.

Contributes

”The programme contributes immensely to the development of national choirs for both local and international competitions. “Through Ntjilo-Ntjilo, our choirs have a huge supply of choristers which provides us with enough ammunition to dominate and conquer the region and world stages,” the minister said. Tiro Mpane, the foundation patron and founder of the Tiro Mpane Foundation said that what he witnessed at the competition was greatness. ”What we are seeing today started off as a dream. I am not regretting what I have started, even though it is not all the choirs that have performed but already I can tell it will be tough for the adjudicators.

“I usually witness such on YouTube, but today it is happening in reality. We are thankful for choirs that have shown interest in competition and may the best win,” he said. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) Stanley Dlamini praised the great work and achievements by the Choral association in the country.
“I can attest that no one would think a Swati song would be sung in Choral music competitions, but this just goes to show the growth of our association.

Celebrating

Choral music has been crucial in the celebration of our histories, telling our ancient stories and celebrating our heroes and heroines in the Eswatini,” he said. One of the adjudicators, Mohau Mogale echoed the previous speaker’s sentiments on the tremendous growth of Choral music in Eswatini. “Every year the competition gets tougher. It is really not easy being on that table and giving the scores. “The competitors are really good and they will live up to the high standards as you can tell that it was good work that they put in,” Mogale said.
His Majesties Correctional Services choir conductor, Melisizwe Zwane said that their performance was the best in the ten years that he has been with them.

”The choir has been continuously growing and keeps on improving. I believe that it is now easier to work together with the choir because we have been together for a long time and that makes our work easier,” he said. Zwane credited the choir’s excellence to the teamwork and said that being together for so long has helped them build a solid foundation.
