MBABANE – The Eswatini Theatre Club has revealed a newly elected committee dedicated to revitalising its role in the cultural landscape of Eswatini.

The committee aims to enhance the club’s presence and foster a vibrant community for artists in Eswatini. The committee was elected at an extraordinary Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Eswatini Theatre Club in Mbabane on August 28, and they have now revealed the names of the individuals. The new committee is led by the chairperson, Phila Dlamini, who brings a wealth of experience and passion for the arts. Other committee members include Vice Chairperson Sizo Hlophe, Treasurer Khulekani Msweli, Vice Treasurer Dzelisile Mdluli Lekgowe, Secretary Maswati Dludlu, and three committee members Thembinkosi Mthethwa, Siya Dlamini and Velemseni Ndzimandze.

The new committee will be instrumental in steering the club towards a new trajectory. Established in 1983, this historic venue has long been a cornerstone of cultural expression in Eswatini, and this alone is a task to uphold the facility’s status as a national treasure that has been a platform for some of the country’s most important artists. According to a press statement sent to publication, the committee will promote the growth of the Eswatini cultural landscape. “Together, this dynamic group aims to revive the club, engage with local artists, and promote diverse expressions reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Eswatini.

The group looks to have the theatre club as a window into Eswatini’s growing cultural landscape and develop international cultural cooperation. The Eswatini Theatre Club invites all stakeholders, the artist community, theatre enthusiasts, and the general public to support this new chapter in its history. Together, we can ensure that the arts thrive in our community,” reads the statement.

The chairperson of the new committee, Phila Dlamini, confirmed the appointment, citing that nothing will be impossible as long as they work together. “Impossible is not possible as long as great minds conjure up a great plan to execute,” Dlamini said. Vice Chairperson Sizo Hlophe shares they will use their best practices to restore it. “The Eswatini Theatre Club is an important cultural institution in the land, it’s almost a heritage place for the city of Mbabane. Our work is to ensure we use the best practices to restore it’s place in the country and Africa as a whole. It is great to work with some of the country’s formidable names on this project; I believe we’ll put down the building blocks that can usher the place into a new discourse,” Hlophe said.
