MBABANE - After enduring a week of master classes to determine a future on the world’s most renowned stage, Lwazi Dlamini is back in Cape Town awaiting his results.

The Cape Town-based liSwati baritone, is a  Siteki native that made history by becoming the first opera singer from Eswatini to qualify for the highly coveted ‘Fabbrica’  Young Artist Programme, a young opera singer training programme offered by one of the world’s most renowned opera houses, the Teatro d’ell Roma, as found in the heart of Italy, Rome. He jetted off to Italy last week Monday, where he began the classes which would determine whether he’d have a permanent job come January in Rome.

The artist flew back to Cape Town yesterday morning to await his results which will be released the following week. Also, while he awaits his results the artist will be performing at a couple of shows sponsored by the Friends of Cape Town. Dlamini traces his singing roots to his high school days at Manzini Nazarene High School, singing under the baton of renowned conductor Benard Maseko, earned his first professional singing qualification at Tshwane University of Technology(TUT), where after earning his Diploma in Vocal Arts in 2019.

Feared

It was during his Tshwane days where he established himself as one of the most feared baritones in South Africa, in the process catching the eyes and ears of one of the world’s foremost opera talent production companies; Cape Town Opera. No wonder, post his TUT era, he proceeded to earn his Advanced Diploma in Vocal Art Performance at University of Cape Town’s School of Music, in 2020. Fresh from his studies at, Africa’s foremost music school, Lwazi fulfilled his childhood dream and joined Cape Town Opera’s Young Artist Programme, after bowling over the panel of adjudicators, where he continues to shine and ace literally every role he WAS assigned singing alongside some of the world’s finest young opera singers.
His last performance in Eswatini was in 2019 during the Standard Bank Choral Music, where he led Manzini Choir to victory in the large category under the baton of Mlungisi ‘Mluga’ Dlamini.

Legendary opera singers who have sung on the Teatro d’ell Roma stage include Italian tenor Benianimo Gigli, South African Soprano Pretty Yende, South Korean baritone Julian Joo-Taek Kim and many others, and in Lwazi Dlamini, the house looks firmly set to have a Swazi first. When reached for comment Dlamini said,“This is quite a humbling gesture from an opera company whose stage I have yearned for my entire singing life,  and to see this desire come to life so early in my singing career is something nothing could have prepared me for.
“But then again, I am not the product of just my talent, but of the immerse support I have received from my people at Cape Town Opera. None of which would have happened without my mother’s support, to whom I continue dedicating every career milestone I record. Of course, credit also goes to constant the silent engine behind my wings, Philani Mpanza  at Siteki, who has been my career’s compass from day one. Overall, I am confident that the kingdom will be well-represented, may all emaSwati remember me in their prayers and budgets too,” commented the singer interviewed from Cape Town.
