MBABANE – The second annual Social Media Awards (SMA’s) have finally been launched.

After much hype and praise from emaSwati having witnessed the first instalment of the SMA last year, which was a huge success, the awards were launched once more yesterday. The event was held at elegant Happy Valley Hotel, Ezulwini. Comedian and radio personality Ndosh was the MC for the day as there were a few invited guests. This included Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) CEO Stanley Dlamini and other key industry players to name few. Speaking with Swazi Boy Communications Officer, Ur Gal Zee; she told this publication that the team was working on a national tour to sensitise about the awards and mainly do an educational programme about social media and its advantages. She also added: “We shall also have mini-awards for people to nominate and vote for their local personalities who will get in the top 10 national awards nominations. The aim is to work with the young people of Eswatini from every sphere of our beautiful kingdom.”

Opportunities

“It is our duty to inspire the youth, especially the disadvantaged people to dream bigger by providing them with opportunities using the mobile phones they have. Through the SMA, we hope we can inspire a young person to dream big in such a way that some of them can be influencers for big corporates in the kingdom,” she said. It is worth noting that the public will be notified in due course on how to vote for their favourite personalities. Unpacking on what will unfold at the mini-workshops, she said there would be a few ideas on how to go about being a social media influencer or being spotted by talent agencies within or outside the country. This will also make people to appreciate the stars who live within their towns and in turn make them thrive in the different fields. Furthermore, she said: “Last year when we hosted the awards, our demographics showed us that the youth that participated in the awards were mostly from the Manzini-Mbabane corridor. “The gap between the urban and rural areas was very evident so this year we intend to bridge the gap and have this nationally.

Advantage

“We feel that the youth outside of the Manzini-Mbabane corridor are left out, so we need to include them on the social media (SM) space. The education of SM advantages and disadvantages is key for the youth to make informed decisions and to take advantage of the opportunities on social media space.” This has then given birth to SMA awarding nominated individuals regionally. This means for each category, there will be four winners who will represent the Hhohho, Lubombo, Shiselweni and Manzini regions.
