MBABANE – Female rapper AyZee continues to make waves in South Africa as she has been featured in the KZN Lockdown Cyphers.

Asanda Zamaswazi Motsa better known by her alias ‘AyZee’ is a singer and songwriter of Swati heritage but is based in Durban, South Africa. The Kwazulu-Natal Lockdown Cypher is pioneered by SPeeKa, a voice over artist, music producer and Zakwe; one of the biggest hip-hop artists in the neighbouring country. A cypher is gathering of rappers, beat boxers and/or breakers in a circle extemporaneously (composed, performed, or uttered at the spur of the moment)making music together. Worth noting is the cypher has deep, long-standing cultural roots in hip-hop culture, African tradition and even religious beliefs.

However, since this was a lockdown edition of the cypher, the rappers from KZN, including AyZee recorded videos of themselves rapping to a beat and it so happened that her verse was chosen and she will be competing against other artists in Season two of the competition. Worth noting is that Zakwe himself posted on the Facebook group that her verse was top notch as he tweeted “Good day, SPeeKa got hold of me. This is really dope. Let me make a plan.”

In a telephonic interview with this publication, AyZee expressed her excitement on being part of the cyphers and that she was proud that her craft was noticed by one of the established lyricists in that country. Furthermore, AyZee is also a part of a group of 18 artists in that province who were chosen to be a part of Building Bridges music collaboration project by Thendric Entertainment which was in partnership with the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC). The talented lyricist said the three-day music camp consisted of creating music and learning more about her craft from mentors Holy Rey and Sketchy Bongo.

Challenge

“As a challenge, we were put to the test to make an Amapiano song and I finessed it as the producers and artists alike loved it. The songs we make here will form part of a compilation thereafter,” she said. She first gained attention in 2017 with the release of her first single ‘Wassup’ under 4sight, a record label based in Ethekwini (Durban). She was meant to release a debut project under the same label in 2018 featuring Loki of SkhandaWorld, Milkiee and Origiinelle but due to circumstances known to 4sight, the project never saw the light of day. AyZee is the daughter of former Eswatini TV presenter Bathobile Qwabe and businessman and Indibano Jazz Club owner Mbusi Motsa.
