MBABANE – The Republic of China’s (Taiwan) largest fertiliser company Taiwan Fertilizer Co. Ltd is looking for an Eswatini company to partner with.

This is one of the companies that Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo is negotiating with to set up shop in Eswatini. The minister is currently in Taiwan with the aim of marketing the country to potential investors as well as sign the Rules of Procedures for the Taiwan-Eswatini Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA).

There are nearly 200 products that could be exported by local businesses to Taiwan under 153 tariff lines courtesy of the ECA that was entered into between the two countries. The landmark pact eliminates 153 listed items such as avocados, beef, natural honey, sugar, timber and vegetables.

It should be mentioned that Eswatini imported E221 million (US$17 million) worth of goods from Taiwan in 2018 while the country exported E39 million (US$300 000).

desire

On Tuesday, the Minister visited Taiwan Fertilizer Co. Ltd where its directors expressed their desire to partner with a local company that they could work with to explore the local and regional market. If they find the partner, the company has pledged to set up in the Kingdom.

Taiwan Fertilizer Co. Ltd produces and sells fertiliser and chemical products in Taiwan and internationally. It provides fertiliser products, such as ammonium sulphate, urea, single super phosphate, potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, organic and biotec organic compound fertilisers, compound and organic fertilisers, instant water soluble fertilisers, taifer bio-power stimulants, and dolomite products.

The company also offers chemical products, including urea for industrial applications, melamine, sulfamic acid, anhydrous ammonia, nitric acid, sulphuric acid, and oleum.
On another note, Khumalo paid a courtesy visit to the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also toured Hsinchu Science Park, where he was hosted by the Deputy Director General of the Park, Andrea Hsu.

Addressing Minister of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan Miguel Tsao and officials from the ministry, the minister explained that the Kingdom of Eswatini was working around the clock to establish an enabling environment for economic growth and equitable prosperity.

“It is against this background that my ministry works hard to find different economic development models that are used in different countries to get the one that works best for the country. As a developing country striving towards first world status, we are determined to use all the available assistance we can get from our bilateral friends in developed countries to help us develop a module fit for our country and the current economic outlook of the world which will be forward looking to curb future challenges,” Khumalo said.

commended

He also commended Taiwan for the recent 90 days’ visa waiver; which he said could not have come at a better time for emaswati wishing to travel to Taiwan.
“The Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini is very grateful to the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) as this waiver will boost bilateral tourism, trade exchanges and strengthen the flow of business between the two countries,” he said.
Describing his visit to Hsinchu Science Park, the minister said it was a “very good benchmarking exposure”.
