MBABANE - Students mocked police over the issue of alleged rape suspect ‘Scarface’ and their impasse with soldiers.

Students sang and danced to sardonic songs in front of the police.

This was during the march to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security as hundreds of students from the country’s tertiary institution marched in the capital city streets to deliver a petition. The songs mocked the police for ‘failing’ to arrest the alleged rapist. The lyrics ran: "You cannot do anything to us unless you apprehend ‘Scarface.’

The police remained silent as they watched the students.

The students also shouted that they would call soldiers to deal with the police. This was in light of the confrontations that police and soldiers have had recently.

Despite the provocations the police remained calm.

Other lyrics that mocked police were "Police fire your teargas canisters. It’s been a while since we have inhaled teargas."

There were moments of near-confrontation between the students and police. However, the police tried to restore order.

Another incident which almost sparked commotion was when one student threw an empty bottle in the air past GM motors.

The bottle missed three female police officers by inches.

Confrontation during petition handover

MBABANE - There was confusion over the handing over of the petition.

A confrontation ensued when Secretary General of the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) Samkeliso Ginindza announced that he would hand over the petition to the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Christopher Magagula.

This occurred during Monday’s march by tertiary institution students. The students were in the capital city to petition the Minister of Labour and Social Security Lutfo Dlamini over grievances on the draft scholarship policy and allowances. The students demanded that the minister receive the petition himself. However, the minister did not appear as per the students’ demand.

This impelled SNUS leadership to deliver the petition to the Undersecretary. This move angered other students.

A war of words ensued between Ginindza and some of the students. Finally, peace was restored Ginindza read the petition.

Cops block explosives suspect from making speech

MBABANE - Explosives suspect and Swaziland National Union of Students President, Maxwell Dlamini was prevented from speaking during the march.

There was drama at around 3pm on Monday when Dlamini was expected to make his address. The drama unfolded just after a student, Terence Vilakati, announced that Dlamini’s life was in danger. But he promised that students would protect Dlamini.

This was during the students’ march to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security over the draft scholarship policy and grievances over allowances.

When Vilakati announced that Dlamini was about to deliver his speech, plain clothes police officers closed allegedly to grab the president.

There was palpable tension as students formed a circle stopping the police from going to the centre where the president was supposed to speak.

Dlamini outsmarted the police. Wearing a hat, he sneaked out of the crowd and vanished without trace until the students dispersed at around 5pm. However, Dlamini did address the crowd at Coronation Park where the march began. He did not speak much, but greeted the students promising to give them an address when they reached the ministry.

Students were disappointed that their president did not speak.

Hhohho Regional Commander Richard Mngomezulu said to this reporter that Dlamini was not allowed to speak at the march because he was an explosives suspect who is out on bail.

Wow, I am so much impressed with what the students did.Our forces tend to mind the minor issues (students marching) and yet they have proved to be a disgrace or rather failure to the community by failing to get hold of 'Scarface'. First things first yenebakitsi!!

This is really funny, so many police officers at the scene as if the students had committed a crime by matching to the ministry to deliver just a paper containing grievances. Serious issues that need the police's attention are not looked into; the question of Scarface for instance has now become a myth, with people of "sizeable" heads making fun of it by inviting the rapist into their homes. Ayi, ungaze uhleke impela la Swatini la la la la...kepha nalongayingeni utawuze ayingene in one way or the other ngci!

Why is goverment doing this to the country? Education is the only way to economic freedom of this country. We take huge chunks of money to feed the not so useful army that fights with civilians and reduce on scholerships. This time bomb the goverment is nursing will explode and they will have no one to blame but their arrogance and ignorance(as some have no qualification).

We as the police are very quick to protect the interests of royalty, not the interests of the people. if "skafeys" would merely try and rape a member of royalty angabanjwa ekuseni kodvwa ke ngobe ubamba luntfu nje, akusiyo intfo lenkhulu kaRoyal Swaziland police. Banike kushaya sive nemastudents lapho ke kutsiwa basebentile!
