MALKERNS – Timothy Shongwe was announced the winner of the National Maize Competition yesterday.

The event was held at the Malkerns Research Station.

Shongwe, from Sigangeni in the Hhohho region, beat 64 farmers from different regions throughout the country hands down.

Contrary to what many may have expected, Shongwe’s reaction was luke-warm; he did not show any emotion.Others were heard saying he had confidence in himself and thus was not surprised when his name was announced as the overall winner.

When sought for comment, Shongwe said he was very happy to have won.

"I am quite excited to have won, I did not expect it. I would like to thank everyone who has assisted me in ensuring that I succeed in whatever I do," he said.

The second prize winner, Esther Simelane of KaPhunga in the Lubombo region, also surprised many. People did not expect such yield from the drought stricken region, whose farmers are struggling to survive.

The criterion used is such that in one hectare, the winner has to exceed the normal average output/yield of 0.5 tonnes.

However, Shongwe outstripped expectations by yielding about 12.64 tonnes per hectare.

The others followed suit; With Simelane yielding 11.38 tonnes, Alfred Nhlabatsi with 10.82 tonnes, Nathi Sihlongonyane with 10.74 tonnes while Henry Masuku got 10.62 tonnes.

About 60 others were declared winners in the four regions; 15 farmers from each.
