VUVULANE – Police have stopped the burial of a three year-old-girl as it was discovered that she died after allegedly being tossed in the air and let to fall to the ground by her uncle.

The police stopped the burial on Tuesday so that a postmortem could be conducted.

The incident that has shocked the small community of Vuvulane at Mgidzangcunu happened on Monday around 3pm when the child, Takitsi Ndwandwe, was allegedly tossed by her uncle, Mabee Ndwandwe, up in the air and he failed to catch her.

The child had been seated on her mother’s lap when Ndwandwe arrived in an alleged drunken stupor and started playing with her. The child’s mother, Fikile Zondo (34), said she was still shocked at the incident.

"When he threw her up for the second time, he could not catch her and Takitsi fell to the ground and landed on her head," the distraught mother said.

She said the child was bruised on the head and before Ndwandwe lifted her up she cried and he took her to another house in the compound.

Ndwandwe had been gone with the child for about 20 minutes and when the mother enquired about her daughter’s whereabouts, she got the shock of her life.

Ndwandwe allegedly told her that even if the child would die her family would bury her (meaning his family).

shocking

Zondo said she did not think her daughter was dead following her brother-in-law’s shocking remarks.

It was around 4pm when she went to report the incident to her in-laws and a few minutes later, Takitsi’s father arrived to tell her that their child was dead.

The Ndwandwe family then began making arrangements for the child’s burial on Tuesday, which was, however, stopped by Tshaneni police.

Police Public relations Officer Superintendent Vusi Masuku confirmed the death and said no arrest had been made so far.
