MHLUME – Inconsistent Green Mamba were made to sweat for victory in the 2-1 win over RSSC United yesterday.

The sugar-belt side did not want to go down without a fight on home soil in the MTN Premier League game played at Nsukuwansuku Stadium in Mhlume. It was the visitors who had a bright start but the hosts made Green Mamba shot-stopper, Mpendulo ‘Sicoco’ Dlamini to make two desperate saves inside the opening 20 minutes.

However, Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini’s charges should have gone a goal up after the half-hour mark but gangling forward, Mbuso Gina, was guilty of missing countless chances against his former team.
On the stroke of half time, Gina made amends for his earlier misses as he fired home from a rebound inside the box after Civil Matsebula’s initial shot hit the woodwork.
The away side led by a solitary goal at the sound of referee Thulani Sibandze’s half time whistle.

RSSC looked hungrier for goals after the restart and their attacks finally paid dividends when the opposition skipper, Siyabonga Mdluli was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box in the 49th minute. Striker Myron Shongwe was denied by ‘Sicoco’ from 12 yards but quickly made amends for his earlier blushes as he headed home beautifully with header from the resultant corner kick by Sibongo Ndzimandze.

RSSC kept knocking on the opposition’s door but failed to double their tally. They thought they grabbed the winner in the 76th minute but their joy was short-lived as Banele Dlamini scored from a offside position.
Green Mamba launched a quick attack a minute later and playmaker, Njabulo Thwala punished a flat-footed opposition defence to restore his side’d lead. The green and white outfit kept RSSC goalkeeper Colani Mngometulu very busy between the poles on debut but the latter made brilliant saves.

Green Mamba held onto the narrow win to keep the hopes of finishing in a respectable position alive.
