MBABANE – Shiselweni Super League side Amalanda, who shockingly booted Manzini Wanderers out of the SwaziBank Cup, claim they were verbally assaulted by a section of the ‘Weslians’ fans after the game.

The players said their joy was cut short after the game as some people verbally assaulted them and threatened them with assault. Amalanda shocked the hub giants by winning 2-1 in the first round of the SwaziBank Cup, in one of the biggest upsets of the richest club tournament.
One of the fans, a former Management Committee member who led the tirade against the Amalanda players, is known to this newspaper but her name cannot be published for ethical reasons.
One of the players who said he was the victim of the verbal abuse was former player Lwazi ‘Shumi’ Mamba who quit the maroon and white outfit in the 2011/12 season. Mamba confirmed yesterday that he was shocked at the way his former team reacted to the loss.

“This is a game of football. On the day we were a better team and won. I don’t think we deserve to be insulted for our job well-done. There was no way we were going to do favours for them as we are also a team with ambitions,” he said.
Mamba said he had a running contract with Amalanda and he had to deliver at his level best for the team.
He said they came to the game knowing that they were going to win, especially after they gone through tough preparations.

“We came to the game against Manzini Wanderers full of confidence. We knew that they were under pressure and our plan was to force the game to go to half time in a draw and we did that,” he said.
Mamba said the insults started while celebrating their victory at the back of the dressing rooms at Somhlolo National Stadium.

Meanwhile, another star player at the Shiselweni Super League side, Calvin Mahlangu said the team was now highly motivated by the fact that they were going to play against one of the biggest teams in the country.
tough
“It was a tough game but we had to do it for our fans who travelled all the way to Lobamba to support the team. Wanderers really gave us a tough time but our mentality was on winning and God helped us to achieve that,” he said.
A source close to the matter said the team was yet to write a letter of complaint to Wanderers.
Meanwhile Amalanda Director William Mamba said he would not like to comment much on what happened after the game.

“In football anything can happen and to me it was part of the game even though it did not go down well with some of the players. We played well on the day and got positive results. I was so happy with the team’s performance,’ he said.
Mamba said they were going to take it one game at a time.
Wanderer PRO Mduduzi Ginindza said he did not witness the incident.

“Maybe the matter will be addressed during our Management Committee (MC) but I am not aware that Amalanda were insulted after the game. What I know is that the Wanderers family was asking itself what went wrong to lose such an important game,” he said.
