‘WESLIANS’ STUN GREEN MAMBA IN THRILLING CLASH

MHLUME – Screams and shrieks of ‘Mahhala hha’ vibrated around the tiny venue and the celebrations spilled into the hub and went on right into the night.

The Mhlume Stadium was painted maroon and white, as the hub giants celebrated a well-deserved victory over the faltering Correctional Services side, Green Mamb, in a free-flowing MTN League clash yesterday afternoon.

The victory, attained when most at the stadium had already concluded the encounter would end in a drab draw, could not have been any sweeter for a Wanderers side that played as if their lives depended on the outcome. The travelling bunch of ‘Weslians’, more or less 1 000 of them had had to endure sheer torture seeing their charges fail to rattle the net despite creating numerous chances on the day against a Green Mamba team that clearly missed their Nigerian marksman and top scorer, Solomon Oladeyile.

Sidumo Shongwe, as he has so often done in the past, struck to give his team the maximum points with less than seven minutes remaining on referee Simanga Nhleko’s watch. He is a predator, this Shongwe boy. Like a starved tiger, he pounced unannounced inside the box to finish off an initial shot by the workaholic Sifiso Matse. Shongwe has scored better goals in the past. But who cared? Certainly not the overjoyed Wanderers supporters who erupted into song and dance. They all count after all. Actually, Shongwe’ strike could prove priceless when the curtains fall in May.

Following yesterday’s result Wanderers are now fourth on the log table and have reason to believe.
The victory was never attained on a silver platter though, as Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini’s Green Mamba made life very difficult for Wanderers, especially in the last half of the game. Mandla ‘Spikiri’ Mkhwanazi, seemed to have the edge over Lwazi ‘Shana’ Maziya but they somehow still failed to trouble the holidaying Sandile ‘Nkomishi’ Gininidza between the Wanderers goalposts.

Man of the Match: Sicelo ‘Junior’ Simelane had a fantastic outing at rightback but spare a thought for the hard running Sifiso Matse, who gave the Green Mamba defence all sorts of problems. He also had an assist in his team’s winner.

Save of the day: Green Mamba’s Mpendulo Dlamini did well to parry for a fruitless corner kick a pile driver by Matse late in the first half.
Shot of the day: It has to be Wanderers’ Sidumo Shongwe’s winner with seven minutes left on the clock.
