MASERU – The winners of this year’s MTN League will not only smile all the way to the bank with a cheque of E670 000 but will get a chance to win a massive E20 million prize cheque by participating in the new COSAFA Super Cup.

The new tournament, which is set to feature league champions of the 2013/14 season from all the 14 members of the COSAFA family, is set to be launched early next year. The tournament is likely to be staged after the 2014 World Cup and before the start of the new season 2014/15.

The tournament is set to be run by a new TV station called Siyaya Crew with the backing of the rich Royal Bafokeng Family in Rustenburg.
The super-rich tournament, whose prize money will be higher than the prestigious CAF Champions League, was discussed at length during the COSAFA Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Lesotho Sun yesterday.

In attendance were high ranking officials namely South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan, Zambia’s FA President Kalusha Bwalya, COSAFA President, Suketu Patel, FIFA Development Officer, Ashford Mamelodi and our own FA Chief Executive Officer, Frederick Mngomezulu.
Interviwed afterwards, former FA first vice President and COSAFA Organising Committee Chairman, Timothy Shongwe confirmed that they are working on staging the COSAFA Super Cup tournament.

“It’s going to be the biggest club tournament in the region involving the league champions of all 14 countries. We are working on the logistics because the tournament was endorsed in the last meeting we held in Zambia in July,” Shongwe said.
He said initially the tournament was supposed to be staged in September or November this year but the sponsors, Siyaya TV crew, a new broadcaster is still awaiting its licence.

“It will have the first prize around E20 million and that’s a lot of money. They have a backing of the Royal Bafokeng Family in Rustenburg. Once they have the licence, we will work on the logistics but we plan to have it sometime next year. We will see where we can slot it, maybe before the start of the new season,” he added.
Mbabane Swallows, who are the current log leaders in the MTN log, stand a chance of participating in the tournament if they maintain their lead until the end of the season.
