MBABANE – Champions of this year’s Swaziland Trade Fair Cup will take home a cool E500 000, it has been established.

The tournament will be sponsored by the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC), which are the sponsors of the annual Swazi Telecom Charity Cup Spectacular. It will be launched in two weeks, after the finals of the Charity Cup, which are billed for August 11 at the Somhlolo National Stadium.

Last year’s tournament, which was dubbed Swazi Telecom Ultimate Home Cup was won by red and white giants, Mbabane Swallows. The ‘Birds’, as the glamour outfit is affectionately known took home E400 000 for their troubles.
Outgoing Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nqobile Magagula could only confirm that her office has secured the package but declined to go into the finer details of the sponsorship package.

“I can confirm that we have secured a sponsor for the Trade Fair. However, details of the sponsorship and the tournament will only be unveiled during the official launch of the tournament. Other than that I cannot say much,” she said.
SPTC Head of Marketing Charles Ndlovu also confirmed that his company will again sponsor the tournament, which was revived last year after a seven year absence.

“I can assure the football lovers that this year’s tournament will be bigger and better. The sponsorship package will obviously be released during the launch, which we hope to have immediately after the finals of the Charity Cup.

“We have an excellent relationship with the Premier League of Swaziland hence we have agreed to continue sponsoring the tournament. It is, however, very likely to be styled in a different name this year because the company could be promoting its new products to the public and after the success of last year’s tournament, we want to make this one bigger and better,” he said.

Sources close to the matter confided to this newspaper yesterday that the company took the decision to increase the sponsorship to make it more exciting for the teams and the entire football fraternity.

“The winners will take at least E500 000 home. That has been agreed on in principle and only a few logistics need to be tied before the launch. There is obviously a lot at stake for both SPTC and the PLS because it is still too early in the season and the soccer fans are itching for action. That on its own makes it almost a certainty that the crowd attendance will be impressive just like it happened last year,” our source said.
