GOVERNMENT’S E100 000 FOR BASE
SANDLENI – The government of Eswatini through the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs alongside the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) has pumped in a sponsorship of E100 000 into the Basketball Association of Eswatini (BASE) for a tournament set to begin late this year.
The sponsorship was announced by Prime Minister (PM) Russell Dlamini in an event held Sandleni Inkhundla yesterday. Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima welcomed the PM. Nzima is also the Sandleni Member of Parliament (MP).Among the invited guests was the PM, Sigwe Member of Parliament (MP) David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, his Mtfongwaneni counterpart in former football commentator Nathi ‘Mdockies’ Hlophe, ESRC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Darius Dlomo and Instacash Managing Director (MD) Mandla ‘Cheeks’ Nxumalo.
The PM thanked all stakeholders who came to be part of the event and highlighted that the sponsorship was strictly for the teams that would participate in the tournament. “All sports are important in the country. Such sports like basketball keep a person healthy and strong. We hope and believe that basketball is still going to grow at Sandleni. Nowadays, we have young people who have thrown themselves into drugs. We experience a high level of violence, but having sports in our communities can play a huge role in keeping people busy so that they can shy away from drug abuse,” Dlamini said. He further mentioned that as government, they were still going to try their level best in supporting the sport. “We are happy about the project that is going on. We will try by all means to mobilise money and build basketball courts in the different communities and schools in the country,” he added.
Gratitude
Meanwhile, the minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima extended his gratitude to the PM for accepting his invite. “As Sandleni Inkhundla we really appreciate the presence of the PM and all parties involved. We also thank the commencement of the project of basketball in the community. We hope and believe it will go a long way in improving the lifestyle of the youth,” Nzima said.
