MBABANE – Inkunz’emnyama are set to lose one of their prized asset in skipper Philani ‘Mkasabuli’ Mkhonto, to Young Buffaloes.

An impeccable source close to Amathole’zinyathi, revealed that the player, who joined Mbabane Highlanders a few seasons ago from the Hhohho Regional Football Association (HRFA) Super League side Hawane Shooting Stars, is on the verge of leaving the black and white capital city giants.

Snatching

“Buffaloes are on a mission to beef their squad as after snatching Mbabane Swallows goalkeeper Qiniso Nyawo; they have now set their eyes on Philani Mkhonto,” the source said.
The source further said ‘Mkasabuli’ was expected to start training with the army side on Monday, alongside the former Umkhonto KaShaka goal-custodian and 2023 Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Trade Fair Cup Best Goalkeeper winner.

“We were looking at having Philani, Nyawo and Siphamandla on Monday, but only Nyawo showed up,” the source said.He disclosed that the former national team Sihlangu attacking player was spotted at Buffaloes training base yesterday morning. “Philani was here today during our morning training session, but he did not take part as he watched the whole session from the sidelines,” he said. The source further shared that ‘Mkasabuli’ was seen conversing with the team’s gaffer Dominic Kunene and top officials after the training.

Introduce

Meanwhile, Buffaloes Chief Executive Officer Sandile Gwebu confirmed that the player was at their training base, but said he was only there to introduce a young goalkeeper.
“He was here to introduce a young goalkeeper, who is his relative so that he could be assessed by the coach,” Gwebu explained.  On the other hand, Highlanders Public Relations Officer (PRO) Kenneth Dlamini could not be reached for comment by the time this report was compiled as his phone rang unanswered. Mkhonto downplayed the reports, saying he never attended the training session.

Contacted

“What I can say is that they once contacted me a few days after the season elapsed and since then nothing else happened,” Mkhonto said. He also revealed that he was still contracted to the black and white capital city giants and he was left with a season in his contract. Notably, Highlanders recently lost their star goalkeeper in Khanyakezwe Shabalala. He joined Nsingizini Hotspurs.
