MBABANE – Football supporters in the country will be delighted to know that the 2024/2025 MTN Premier League, will make its much-anticipated return next month.

According to a press release from the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE), headed by acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Football Manager Pat Vilakati, the league will resume play after a two-month break, much to the delight of local football enthusiasts. This is the earliest kick-off, as compared to the past two seasons. The 2023/24 campaign got underway on September 15, 2023. The 2022/23 season won by Green Mamba started on October 1, 2022.

“Notice is hereby given to all PLE member clubs that league kick-off dates for the 2024/25 season have been confirmed. Both divisions will kick-off on the weekends of August 17 and 24, 2024, respectively. Member clubs are encouraged to finalise the club requirements before July 30, 2024 in order to be licensed to register their players,” reads the letter in part. Meanwhile, capital city giants Mbabane Swallows added yet another feather to their illustrious 76-year history, clinching the league championship for the seventh time last season. The team, led by Caleb ‘No Nonsense’ Ngwenya, finished atop the league standings with a total of 55 points, ahead of their fierce rivals, Green Mamba with 50 points.

The MTN National First Division (NFD) also witnessed a shift in the standings, as Sidwashini United, trading as Seven Dreams in the past season, achieved a historic promotion to the top flight of Eswatini football. This was the club’s first-ever promotion to the highest level of competition and their achievement was matched by fellow contenders Sisonke FC, who also earned a coveted spot in the top-tier.

Fixtures

Acting CEO  Vilakati further informed the public that the Premier League of Eswatini  would be releasing the official 2024/25 MTN fixtures and regulations in due course, providing more clarity on the upcoming season. “I assure our stakeholders that we are in the process of finalising the official fixture list and regulations for the 2024/25 MTN season,” he said.
