MBABANE – The journey continues for Eswatini taekwondo artists.

It is once again a chance for Eswatini karatekas to prove their worth with sensations Saneliso Masuku and Sihlelelwe Matsebula leading the list of 39 members. The squad that includes coaches and athletes competing in different events left the country yesterday for the Taekwondo Regional Team Championships held in Maseru, Lesotho. The competition is expected to start today.

Masuku emerged victorious and was crowned the winner of the Last Dance Championship in Mozambique earlier. He is ranked in the top 20 athletes in his category of  68kg for the current season continentally. Meanwhile, Matsebula made headlines for being the 2023 Outstanding Junior Sportsman of the Year.

Artist Bonkhe Sikhondze also made the cut. Sikhondze has been missing tournaments for some time, as he was not part of the squad that competed in the African Games earlier this year. Eswatini is billed to compete with artists from Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho among others.

There will be three categories in this event with the Team Cup Champions being the main event. It will be followed by the seniors (17 years age group) and the juniors (12 to 15 age group). In the main event, they will use the format of groups made up of four men or women infield, with an extra player being a substitute in the case of casualties, making it a total of five players.

There will be also mixed-gender groups, wherein gender will be balanced in each of the participating groups. In the junior category the team caters for will be one on one knockout format and no more team participation.
