MBABANE – Newly-crowned MTN Premier League champions Mbabane Swallows are not allowed to keep the trophy beyond March 30, 2025.

This means they will surrender it to the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) office before the conclusion of the new season (2024/25). In essence, they are only allowed to hold onto it for 45 weeks. This is as per Article 6.1 of the PLE Rules and Regulations.

“The trophy must be returned to the League office, in the same condition it was presented, by no later than 30 March of the year following the year in which it was presented. “A member club that is unable to fulfil the requirements shall be summarily charged with the costs of replacing the premier league trophy,” read the rules in part.

Swallows Public Relations Officer (PRO) Knowledge ‘Bhambo’ Ngwenya said he was not aware of the arrangement. This publication also wanted to establish if there was any lined up trophy parade. This was Swallows’ seventh MTN Premier League title, but the first since 2018.

Permanently

The premiership trophy is floating and a club that wins it for for three years in a row shall keep the trophy permanently. In the MTN era, only Royal Leopard have won it three times in a row. The police side won three straight titles in the period 2006-2008 as well as between 2014 and 2016.

In neighbouring South Africa, the league champions are to return the trophy before the end of February of the following year. This is per Article 6.1 of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Handbook.
