MBABANE – The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) stands to benefit handsomely from a Confederation of African Football (CAF) bounty.

This follows that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 has made a profit of E1.4 billion through live stream channels. CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, in an interview with France 24, revealed the financial benefit the CAF received after the tournament. “The AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire has been the most profitable ever. We’ve made over USD 80 million (about E1.4 billion).

“That’s the profit. If we look at previous editions, we made around US$4 million (about E72 million). So we’ve jumped to US$80 million (E1.4 billion), and a huge chunk of that money is going to the 54 countries for football development,” said the CAF president. EFA Communications and Marketing Officer Muzi Radebe said they can only comment when they have received a correspondent from CAF.

Investing

The CAF president said they were investing a huge part of the profit into football development across all the 54 member states of CAF. This comes as refreshing news to African football as 90 per cent of African nations have been lacking the funds to develop their football. Motsepe stated that one of his objectives was for an African team to win the next World Cup in 2026. According to him, the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Ivory Coast earlier this year, was the most successful in the history of African football.
