BIG BEND – In a crucial MTN Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) fixture between Moneni Pirates and Ezulwini United, it was stay or go for Moneni Pirates.

Moneni Pirates narrowly avoided relegation as they concluded the league with a 1-1 draw against Ezulwini United. The deadlock was broken by Moneni’s Senanelo Nkambule, followed by an equaliser from Ezulwini’s Henock Katumba. Ezulwini, kicking off the match in 10th place with 24 points in 25 matches, aimed to solidify their standing, while Moneni Pirates, in 12th place with 21 points, sought to secure their spot in the league. As the first half progressed, Moneni enjoyed more possession, creating half chances in front of the goal, while Ezulwini struggled to combine effectively.

Scored

The deadlock was finally broken eight minutes into the second half when Moneni’s Senanelo Nkambule, who had come off the bench, scored the opener, sending the Moneni fans into a frenzy. However, Ezulwini fought back, equalising through Henock Katumba in the 81st minute, adding a dramatic twist to the match. As the game concluded in a 1-1 draw, both teams showed their respect for the FIFA Accredited Referee, Letticia Viana, and Assistant Referee, Sifiso Nxumalo, with a guard of honour. This gesture highlighted the sportsmanship and camaraderie present in the game of football as well as the mutual respect that teams and officials have for each other.

Moneni Pirates, having narrowly escaped the threat of relegation, entertained their enthusiastic supporters at Mayaluka Stadium, with Menzi ‘Magawugawu’ Simelane stealing the show with his exceptional skills. The match concluded with a sense of relief for Moneni Pirates, securing their spot in the top-flight league, where they will aim to conclude the season on a less stressful note. However, it would be an anxious wait for Pirates after Manzini Wanderers filed a protest against Denver Sundowns. If Wanderers win the protest, they will finish ahead of Pirates and relegate the latter.
