MBABANE – The much-anticipated governance meeting of Athletics Eswatini (AE) organisation held at the OlympAfrica Centre in Lobamba on Monday, failed to yield a resolution on the ongoing impasse.

The meeting, attended by various key stakeholders, including the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Delegate, General Jackson Tuwei, AE Board members, and representatives from several AE clubs, was marked by tension and dissatisfaction due to the lack of immediate solutions. The meeting commenced with an opening prayer at 16:15pm, where the CAA delegate, General Tuwei, extended congratulations to AE for its active role in the World Athletics (WA) family. However, the purpose and agenda of the meeting were immediately questioned by the attending clubs, seeking clarity on its objectives. This led to a discussion of the challenges faced by the clubs, with a focus on the refusal to call a special general meeting and the dysfunction within the AE Board due to resignations.

Inability

AE President, Zakhele Dlamini, clarified that the current meeting was not a special assembly and could not make binding decisions. He explained the board’s inability to form a quorum, preventing the calling of a special assembly, a situation not addressed in the AE constitution, necessitating CAA intervention.  This explanation was met with disagreement from some members, particularly from GFC, who argued that the AE constitution did cover the situation. The meeting concluded with General Tuwei summarising the challenges and assuring the clubs that CAA would prepare a report and recommendations, promising resolution.

However, despite these assurances, unrest grew among the members, with GFC members becoming unruly. The meeting was eventually adjourned by the CAA delegate at 19:10pm due to escalating tensions. This was contained in the minutes which were shared by outgoing Chief Operations Officer (COO) Thoba Mazibuko.
