MBABANE – It seems Premier League teams might not access the Mavuso Sports Centre until next season.

The latest developments come at a time when the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) is facing a dilemma of securing a venue for next week’s big derby between Mbabane Highlanders and Mbabane Swallows. Mavuso Sports Centre, which is currently undergoing renovations on the VVIP box, has been hosting the massive fixture in the absence of Somhlolo.

rehabilitation

The rehabilitation of the Mavuso Sports Centre commenced about a month ago, after the Eswatini Investment Promotion Authority (EIPA) announced that Du-Van Developers was awarded the tender. The contractor’s proposed contract price was E5 706 010.69, as stated in the intention to award the tender. The EIPA, when contacted on the availability of the venue for the derby, shared the estimated period for the renovations. “The upgrades are expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2024 (between July and September). “At present, Mavuso has not received an application from the PLE for the use of the stadium next week,” said EIPA.

The authority embarked on the journey of renovating the centre after noting that the VVIP was no longer in a good state. This called for an upgrade as well as modernising it to add more features that were not available in the demolished set up. It was also disclosed that the new-look area would have most of the standard modern features available in a stadium hospitality suit.
This past Sunday, PLE Football Manager Pat Vilkati said the issue of the venue for the titanic clash was yet to be finalised. Somhlolo National Stadium, which is an alternative venue for the derby, is also currently closed.
