MBABANE – Mbabane Highlanders Captain Philani Mkhonto has been linked with a move to South Africa’s DStv Premiership side Royal AM.

Royal AM are led by the flamboyant Shauwn Mkhize. A source at the ‘Bull’ asserted that the player’s scintillating performance this past season at Highlanders and Sihlangu, had earned him interest from the South African side.

The player might have also sparked interest during the clash between Highlanders and Royal AM, during the CAF Confederation Cup last year. Highlanders and Royal AM played on October 16, 2022 and October 11, 2022. Despite losing 2-0 to Royal AM on agregate, Mkhonto played well and got people from South Africa inquiring about his availability. It has emerged that the talks had been ongoing and were now at an advanced stage. “The people from Royal AM are close to making the deal work. However, the two directors, Ally Kgomongwe and Shauwn Mkhize are reportedly still trying to tie up the loose ends,” said the source. Reached for comment, Kgomongwe said he would rather not talk about it for now until something concrete was on the table. “I have been busy with work here in South Africa, I will definitely tell you if something comes up,” he said.

Efforts to get comments from Mkhonto proved futile as he could not be reached immediately. Mkhonto has been an outstanding performer this season, finding the back of the net a couple of times. If the deal is sealed, he will be the second player to ply his trade in a professional league after Lindo Mkhonta, who plays for Zambia’s Zesco United. Mkhonto was playing for Hawane Shooting Star before he joined Highlanders. In his first season, he was not a regular as he used to come as a substitute. It was his second season that he proved he was ready for the big stage and even got himself a national team call-up. Since then, he had been in good form despite that at some point he was out due to an injury. Many wrote him off when he got injured and was on crutches, but when he fully recovered, he reclaimed a place in the first eleven and had been featured ever since.

Meanwhile, other players who played in the Premier Soccer League were Yuki Masina, Siza Dlamini, Wonder ‘Samba Jive’ Nhleko, Felix Badenhorst and Justice Figuareido, to mention a few. Royal AM is a team that plays in the PSL and is owned by Shauwn Mkhize, professionally known as Mam’Mkhize. The latter is a South African socialite, businesswoman, philanthropist and television personality. Her team finished the league on position 11.
