MBABANE – It never rains, but pours for Umkhonto KaShaka.

After the alleged resignation of the Mbabane Swallows and All Nations Christian Church in Zion Founder Archbishop Bheki Lukhele this past weekend, the capital city giants have been dealt another blow.  The red and white capital city giants’ member in the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Board of Governors, Sebenele Nhlengethwa, has ‘flown out’ of the ‘Birds’ nest. Lukhele is alleged to have stepped down as the president of the club after the endless violence associated with the club this season, which ended on Sunday. Nhlengethwa filled the void, which was left by former Governor Andreas Lukhele, who was appointed by His Majesty King Mswati III as the Industrial Court of Appeal Judge last year in October. Nhlengetfwa revealed to this publication that since Lukhele was stepping down as the leader of Swallows, he too was jumping ship with immediate effect as governor of the team. “How can I be the governor of the team when the person who appointed me has left? I don’t have powers anymore as the person who gave them to me is gone. I can confirm that yes, I am no longer with the team too,” Nhlengethwa explained.

leave

When quizzed on what made the president leave the team, Nhlengethwa said he cited violence as the main factor, as Lukhele was a leader of a big religious institution in the country and was a public figure here in Eswatini and beyond the borders. “He was so concerned about the violence that was associated with Swallows and each time a commotion erupted, he got endless calls from his associates,” he said. Nhlengethwa also said before Lukhele stepped down, he wondered what he would do in a scenario where somebody died during the mayhems associated with Swallows, as according to Lukhele, football was a recreational sport for all. He further said that he was yet to sit down with the management committee (MC) of Swallows and discuss issues of the assets that were bought by Lukhele for the club. The out-going president spent close to a million when purchasing a brand new Mercedes-Benz sprinter, after the one which was bought by the slain Chairman Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze was sold to rivals Mbabane Highlanders on auction.

resignation

Meanwhile, the team’s National Supporters Committee (NSC) Chairman, Mboni Dludlu, said they learnt with shock of the resignation of Lukhele, through online soccer publications and in one of the country’s daily publications. “Such News whether true or not are disturbing, as NSC we have not been formally informed about the latest development. It would be unfortunate if such news will be true, when the team was taking shape and we were certain that we have passed the building exercise with the club ready to bring silverware,” Dludlu lamented. He further urged the Swallows supporters not to press the panic button as they would engage the relevant stakeholders and issue a formal statement thereafter.
