MBABANE – Some do it for fun, some want to break records.

Those were the views from some of the parkrunners when asked about their ambitions from partaking in the weekly 5km-timed run. The race is held every Saturday at the Mbabane Club, starting at 8am. Interviewed after the race, second-placed Nokuphiwa Zwane said despite that she was a runner-up in the ladies category; she had bigger goals this year. “I’m happy that I manage to come second but I feel I can do better than this. I do not want to win in the ladies category but I want to break the 20:02 minutes female record,” said Zwane.

The 20:02 minutes record was set by Gugu Mthembu during the 51st edition of the Mbabane parkrun, which was staged on April 28, 2018. Zwane clocked 23:52 minutes during the 200th edition of the weekly race. Her personal best time is 23:50 minutes. Meanwhile, Gcebile Dlamini said despite coming late, she felt she did her best. “Joining the parkrun makes one fit. I want to do a sub 20 minutes before the end of this year,” said Dlamini. Gcebile’s time was not traceable as she did not carry her barcode. The barcode is scanned upon the finish line to record the time of the runner.
