MBABANE – Mbabane Swallows attacking midfielder Sizolwethu ‘Nunu’ Shabalala has finally spoken out about the tough mental journey he has travelled, as he makes his way to full recovery.

The enterprising attacking midfielder is the red and white capital giants’ development product, after being promoted to the first team alongside Richard McCreesh. ‘Nunu’ has been a regular in the starting line-up of Umkhonto KaShaka, but has only played one game this MTN Premier League season due to an operation. Reflecting on the journey back to action, the Swallows player said his recovery was mostly mental, as he had to stay motivated under difficult circumstances. “It has been a tough feeling,” he said, as Mbabane Swallows prepared to take on Manzini Wanderers  in their  first MTN Premier League game of the year 2023 next week.

“It has been so hard for me since I really wanted to give my best this season after scoring in the first game of the season against Young Buffaloes, but I’m glad that my teammates are doing a very good job taking each game as it comes,” he said. The Swallows maestro underwent an operation two months ago after complications in his stomach. “I had perforated ulcers and I’m much better now. On the outside it’s a healed scar and the doctor said I can start to train my lower body and do a lot of walking and I’ll resume full training end of January,” he said. He went on and talked about the injury that has derailed him this season. “I would say it was a long journey for me; I never thought I’d be out for long. It was a serious injury that made me someone that was going to take it with a positive attitude. The mental strength brought me back into the game. But the attitude is what matters the most, I appreciate the person that I am and to be here at Mbabane Swallows,” ‘Nunu’ said.

‘Nunu’ will make only his second appearance of the current season when he gets the green light from the Mbabane Swallows medical team, he has asked patience from the Swallows supporters. “All I’m asking from the fans is that they should be patient with me when I get back to the field, because I will have fear in the beginning  since an abdomen operation isn’t something you should take for granted,” he said. Swallows will be opening the year 2023 with another titanic clash after losing the Mbabane derby to rivals Mbabane Highlanders by 2-1. They will be looking at returning  to winning ways when the cross sword with fellow giants Wanderers in a fixture billed for Mavuso Sports Centre next Saturday.
