MBABANE – Local boxers exchanged leather over the past weekend during a competition held at the Somhlolo Shisanyama and Zebra Force bagged six gold medals.

The event was organised by the Eswatini Boxing Association (EBA) in collaboration with Somhlolo Shisanyama. It was staged on Saturday. The tournament was attended by Ingwe Boxing Club, Titans Boxing Club, Correctional Boxing Club, Manzini Boxing Club, and Zebra Force Boxing Club. Unlike in previous tournaments that did not have bouts for girls, EBA commended the increase in girls’ participation, as there were four girls and 18 boys competing. The event was a build-up to the main boxing competition of the year, the Eswatini Boxing Day penned for December 26, 2022.

EBA Acting Secretary General Nathi Dlamini, applauded the improvement in the junior boxers’ performances and further encouraged more girls to join boxing. The next tournament will be held on Saturday at Ezulwini Roman Catholic Primary School. “It was a very good tournament and there is so much improvement in the youngsters.  EBA highlighted the increase of girls in this tournament which is one of its objectives to encourage teams to bring more to the sport. The next tournament is on Saturday at Ezulwini Roman Catholic Pimary School.  All teams are invited to participate to keep their boxers in shape and improve them,” Dlamini said.

Zebra Force boxers dominated the bouts. Siboniso Vilakati won on unanimous decision against Siboniso Kunene from Titans Boxing Club. Their second gold medal came from Khayelihle Mkhabela, who beat Mzwandile Dlamini in a two-round knockout (KO). Khethelo Mziyako knocked out Titans’ Sandile Hlatjwayo in bout six and Veliswa Magaya had a two-round KO victory against Luyanda Matse from Mhlume.
