MBABANE – Siphiwosami Mamba and Sinengcebo Ntshalintshali were on Saturday crowned champions of the Mhlume Tennis Club in-house tournament.

At least 23 tennis players competed on the day. In the boys’ division, Siphiwosami won 6-4, 6-2 against Siphamandla Tsabedze, in the final. Sinengcebo outclassed Amahle Mngadi by 6-0, 6-2 in the girls’ final clash. Coach Gabi Mkhabela, said their main focus was to introduce the new players from Mhlume High School and testing them against the more experienced players.
Mkhabela said they were planning to host a high school tennis tournament and invite high schools including Waterford KaMhlaba, Sifundzani, Ngomane and U-Tech at the end of their external examinations.

“After seeing that the main focus was now on the primary school players, I and Coach Bongani Kunene decided to include the players from high school to avoid losing them. We want them to know that tennis has no age limit and the fact that you don’t play to compete but to stay fit. I decided to mix the high school players and those from Mhlume Tennis Club, so that they acquire more skills on how to score points, as well as the players’ expected behavior during a match,” Mkhabela said. Mhlume Tennis Club is one of the largest tennis clubs in the country and  it has already proved to be dominant in local junior tennis tournaments such as the Swaziland Building Society (SBS) Tennis Tournament. Mkhabela highlighted the importance of inter-club competitions, and cross-border tournaments, which they used to measure their players’ standard of play. Aspiring tennis players from Mhlume were also encouraged to join training sessions held every Saturday at Mhlume Club and Etingwenyeni tennis courts.
