MBABANE – The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) has given teams a stern warning over the use of foreign substance (muti) during games.

The use of foreign substance during the matches had been on the rise as seen last season where teams had to be fined for such offences. PLE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kenneth Makhanya issued a strong warning against the use of unwanted substances during games.

Desist

“Teams should desist from using foreign substances into the field of play or face the music,” he said at the national radio, the Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services (EBIS 1) Sports Show hosted by Nathi ‘Mdockies’ Hlophe yesterday morning. The PLE Week 2 games  are back after they were postponed for the 2022 MoMo Cup, which was, however, cancelled at the eleventh hour to safety and security concerns at the initial venue, the King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium. “I would like to warn against the use of substances that are not related to football such as salts and mirrors that they should remain at home, because the fines are hefty,” Makhanya said.

He said should a team found to be using such substances, they would face a summary fine of E30 000, this is according to the 2022/23 MTN Premier League Rules and Regulations. Article 10.10.1 of the MTN Premier League Rules states that it shall be an offence for a club, if its supporters, fans, officials, players and/or ball retrievers are seen using any substance that is alien to, or is foreign to, a football field or stadium.

Fined

While, Article 10.10.2 states that: “Any club identified by the referee/match commissioner or match coordinator committing any of these offences shall be summarily fined an amount of E30 000 by the PLE. It further states that the disciplinary committee (DC) shall double the fine, if a club appears for the second time on a similar charge of violence and use of foreign substances and if found guilty. Further to that, a club shall lose three points and three goals from their accumulated number of games. The MTN Premier League game will be spread across the country today with two double headers at Somhlolo National Stadium as well as the King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium.
