LOBAMBA – History in the making.

Despite the 7-0 thrashing of Mauritius by the national team, it is not in Eswatini Under-20s hands if they are to reach the semifinals after over 20 years in the TotalEnergies U-20 AFCON Egypt 2023 COSAFA Qualifiers. The young stars join South Africa in the COSAFA Under-20 Championships for being the biggest winners. South Africa beat Lesotho with the same score in 2020 to be in the history books and Mduduzi ‘Sikhalo’ Nxumalo-led side were unstoppable yesterday afternoon. There was also a hero in the making in Mukelo Nkambule, who scored four goals to take home the soccer ball and the man of the match award. The Bhunya Black Aces striker was simply the best as he netted a hat-trick in the first-half of the match, with the young stars leading 4-0 at half time.

respectively

They will now have to wait and pray that Angola and South Africa fail to score over two goals against one of the weakest teams in the tournament, Seychelles, and log leaders Comoros, respectively. A win with plus two goals for both Angola and South Africa will see the local lads depart the tournament in the group stages as it has been happening since 2002. All the three teams are gunning for being the best finisher to reach the semifinals with three cubs being Zambia, Comoros and the defending champions Mozambique, already in the knockout stage of the tournament. Angola faces Seychelles at noon at Mavuso Sports Centre, while South Africa will play Comoros at 3:30pm with Eswatini waiting.

Back to the game, Eswatini watched by a crowed of over 200 people, started the game like a house on fire. They attacked from the start and it came as no surprise when Nkambule opened the score board three minutes into the match. He was back two minutes later for a brace.

offence

Things became worse for the visitor as they were reduced to 10-men after Louis Labonte was shown a red card for a second bookable offence. Eswatini took advantage and netted the sixth goal with nine minutes remaining before full time, through Sizwe Khumalo. With three minutes before the final whistle, Eswatini was also reduced to 10 men, when Philiswa Dube was also shown a red card by the referee Elfaschad Attoumani for the same kind of offence. In additional time, Eswatini was still looking for more goals and Siphephelo scored the seventh with the, last kick of the game. Meanwhile, Zambia edged Botswana 1-0 at the Mavuso Stadium to top the group.
