MBABANE – Mbabane Swallows newly-signed striker Mohamed Kabia has been called for national duty back home in Sierra Leone.

The former Denver Sundowns forward was recently unveiled by the red and white capital city giants alongside his former teammate Triston Dunn last Friday. The player confirmed that he received an email requesting him to join the Sierra Leone Under-23 squad for the TOTALEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) second round of qualifiers against Zambia. “Yes it’s true that I have been called up by our national Under-23 coach for our game against Zambia in October 21 this year and my team has also received the correspondence,” Kabia said.

He said the call-up was a dream come true for him as he was praying to represent his country of birth on national level. “I’m over the moon about being called up by the national team, as it is every player’s dream to represent his native country,” he said. Kabia also said the call-up to the Under-23s was a good stepping stone towards achieving his dream of playing for ‘Junior Leone Stars’, as the national team of Sierra Leone is fondly known in football circles. “I will give my best in the game to catch the eyes of the senior national team coaches and this call-up has come at the right time as I have joined a big club in Mbabane Swallows and I’m grateful to the club’s management for the opportunity they gave me,” he said.

He further said that he was looking forward to winning trophies with Umkhonto KaShaka and promised the management, technical bench as well as the supporters of Swallows to expect a 100 per cent performance from him. The Junior Leone Stars will host the first leg of the second stage of the preliminary round to be played in Freetown on the weekend of October 21-23 this year, before an away trip to Lusaka, Zambia a week later. The winner will advance to the final round of the qualification and could potentially square off for a place in Morocco between the winners of defending champions Egypt and Eswatini. The country’s national Under-23 team beat Botswana 3-2 on aggregate to set a date against the Young ‘Pharaohs’.
