MBABANE – Two of the country’s ‘Big Three’ clubs were in danger of losing their seeding status in the E2 million MTN-sponsored MoMo Cup by late yesterday.

Those were Manzini Wanderers and Mbabane Swallows, who were still far from the 20 000 votes target.  These big guns, who include Mbabane Highlanders were seeded during the launch of the inaugural tournament. However, the condition was that their fans should vote to reach 20 000 votes to show that they were the country’s biggest teams or risk being kicked out of the semifinals, even without kicking a ball.

By 8:15pm yesterday, both Wanderers and Swallows were still below 10 000 votes, with only third-placed Highlanders coming to the party with over 16 000 votes). Wanderers were fifth with 8 816 votes. Swallows, on the other hand, were a cause for concern to  their loyalists by late last night, as they were just seventh with only  4 962 votes.  Based on the 8:15pm updates, all three big teams were still losing their seeding status and by extension their places in the semi-finals were being occupied by Rangers, Nsingizini Hotspurs and late bloomer Manzini Sea Birds.

According to Article 3.5 (b) of the MoMo Cup Rules and Regulations, seeded clubs that do not hit the 20 000 votes target will be replaced by the mon-seeded team(s) that would have accumulated more votes at the end of the voting process. The last voting update was expected to be released just before midnight yesterday. However, the list of   the semi-finalists and teams to play in this weekend’s play-offs will be known today. Notably, the votes had also hit the 100 000 minimum target before 9pm, as they were at 104 137.
