MATSAPHA – The late Deputy National Commissioner Vusi Masuku will be honoured with an annual race.

It is dubbed the Vusi Masuku Half Marathon and it takes centre stage on October 8 this year. Registration is already open and an entry fee of E50 has been set across the three races which are; 21km, 10km and 5km long. The race will start and finish at the Police Academy (Matsapha Police College).  Athletics Eswatini (AE) President Zakhele Dlamini, in collaboration with Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) and the Masuku family, have embraced the initiative of the tribute Half marathon to Masuku who earned the title of a sports leader through his love and support for sports activities in Eswatini.

The marathon launch event was held yesterday morning at the Police Academy. Before his demise in May this year, Masuku had been visibly involved in sports activities and also shared ideas of developing the sporting activities.  The sports that were closest to his heart included; athletics, volleyball, basketball, netball and bodybuilding . He personally assisted a number of athlete. The former Superintendent was hailed as a humble and selfless man who was always willing to help athletes and the needy in various communities. “As athletics he has done a lot for the sport. Take Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa for instance; he contributed a lot to what he is today. In fact he was more like a father to him. As a family, we saw it fit to do something in his honour and when the idea to dedicate the race to him came, everyone just said yes,” Dlamini said.

Gelane Masuku, a sister to the late stalwart, thanked AE for the initiative and hoped that it would positively impact the community in terms of motivating healthy living through running. She also assured the Masuku family members’ participation in this inaugural race and thanked in advance all the athletes and individuals who would be on the starting line. “We thank Athletics Eswatini for the great initiative and appreciate the splendid support from REPS. As Vusi Masuku was a man of integrity, we hope that the athletes who would participate in the half marathon would emulate him in order for it to be a great success,” Gelane said. Also present was the Acting Superintendent Patrick Mavimbela who assured their readiness for the race and thanked AE for roping them in on the initiative.
