Bouwer, who is captain of the national team that will leave for the United States of America (USA) in October for  the World Black Bass Championships was crowned champion of the 2022 Maguga Cash Challenge played between this past Saturday and Sunday. Anglers from Eswatini and beyond the country’s borders put their skills to test in a bid to win a E15 000 prize for the biggest bass. Bouwer’s biggest fish and second biggest fish rocked the scale weighing in at 4.205kg and 3.275kg, respectively. He took the first and second place in the final weigh-in and won E15 000 for the biggest fish of the tournament. Joining in the celebration were his team members, team blue, as each boat comprised of four anglers. South African angler Henry Peterson was the runner-up after coming in third with a fish of 2.990kg while Kevin Lincoln from Eswatini was placed fourth with a catch of 2.400kg. Justin from South Africa came in fifth with a fish of 2.360kg.

Junior angler for the 2022 Maguga Cash Challenge was Josh Puttkamer with a solid fish of 1.240kg. The latter was followed closely by Luke Brerro with a catch of 1.205kg. Torren Bouwer, learning from his father, brought in a fish of 1.115kg as his best fish and the youngest angler Carter Mckenzie weighed a good fish of 1.090kg to claim fourth place. Angling competitions have one specific rule; catch and release to ensure the continuous growth of fish. That was applied in this competition. Tournament Coordinator William Brown thanked all the sponsors, who contributed to the success of the competition and also congratulated the anglers on their achievements. “A big thank you to our main event sponsors who included Oracle Insurance, United Holdings and The Renewable Resource Company TRRC. Thank you to Ngwenya Glass for the beautiful trophies,” he said.

Brown further thanked Emlembe Beverages for their refreshments. “Another thank you to Capital Bolts & Nuts for the sponsor of the junior prize, which included a fishing rod, reel and tackle box,” he said. Meanwhile, the Eswatini Angling Association (EAA) is sending a six-man team to the USA in October to compete in the Black Bass World Championships. The travelling team will be released in due course.
