MATSAPHA – The Eswatini 5km walk/run that seeks to prevent domestic violence is back with a bang.

This year marks the third edition. The walk/run will be held on September 3, starting at Sharpe Memorial, Manzini at 6am. It was launched yesterday at Far East Textile in Matsapha. Golden Foot Club is the host. The walk/run is aimed at raising funds to assist in the fight against domestic violence and it is supported by the Church of the Nazarene and United States duo of Doug and Margaret Eaton. The race was first held in the country in 2018 with the second edition in 2019. It was cancelled in the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Golden Foot Club (GFC) Chairperson Tokky Hou said the walk/ run was open to everyone and they were even looking at churches to come in numbers. Among the prizes, there is E1 000 for the biggest group and largest church contingent. “All race fees and sales of donated garments will go all the way in assisting the victims of domestic violence that is in the increase in the country,” she said.

Launch

Doug, who was in the company of his wife Margaret during the launch said the race was held at same time with the one in Bethany, Oklahoma in the United States. Registration for the race is already open and it is E100 for each athlete. He said the race in Oklahoma had been raising funds that assist the country. The race will start at the road behind the Sharpe Memorial Church of the Nazarene. The route will be from Sharpe Church left to David Hynd Street and then to the bypass along Mavuso. The runners will then race in front of William Pitcher College and then back to the Sharpe Church. “Eswatini 5km is therefore a tool which provides a forum to sensitise emaSwati about the scourge of this pandemic; a moment to call for behavioural change; and to invite our people to partner with Church of the Nazarene by giving the survivors another health chance in life,” said Church of the Nazarene district superintendent Rev M Mkhatshwa during the launch.
