MBABANE – Drama.

This Hhohho Regional Football Association (HRFA) executive committee led by Nigel Shongwe has been petitioned by 14 of their affiliates who claim they have overstayed their welcome. The teams claimed, according to the HRFA Constitution, the executive committee’s term in office expired this past Sunday. They cited Article 20.1 of the HRFA Statutes, which states that: The executive committee members shall be elected by the general assembly for a period of four years. Their mandate shall begin at the end of the general assembly which elected them. Executive members may be re-elected.The teams went on to state that the current executive committee members were elected in August 2018 after the term of the previous executive members.  As a result, they felt the term ended on July 31.

Date

Since the Constitution does not specify the actual date, the affiliates have referred to Article 70 (Article 70 Financial Period), which states that the financial period of the HRFA shall begin on August 1 and end on July 30. The affiliates concluded that since it was now August, the executive was in office illegally and in disregard of Article 70; they further felt that the executive should have stopped before June 30, 2022.

Petition

Meanwhile, HRFA Secretary General (SG) Nkosingiphile Shongwe acknowledged receipt of the petition through WhatsApp.  “They are not sure of what they are talking about as they even stated that the Constitution does not specify the date in which they were to leave office, but technically our time is up,” Shongwe said. He also said the season started very late and by default they should be in office until after the Annual General Assembly slated for September 25, 2022. On the other hand, Bulandzemi Young Stars Secretary Nokuthula Nxumalo confirmed that as teams they have petitioned the HRFA over their stay in office as they were supposed to have left at the end of July. Furthermore, the petition was inviting teams to a meeting to discuss the crisis arising from the expired term of the HRFA executive committee; however the date and venue will be communicated to the clubs in due course.
