MBABANE – At least E10 000 will help taekwondo star Wandile Maziya get proper training that will  give him better chances of a podium finish in the 2022 World Championships.

The 32-year-old has been offered a training camp at the end of September by Tunisia, ahead of the World Championships billed for November in Mexico. Maziya is among the hopefuls to represent the country in the global championships. The offer was handed to him after his good performance in the recently-ended Africa Taekwondo Championships, where he was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the tournament by Egypt’s Nassar. Maziya said the Tunisians offered him everything other than the ticket.

“They said if I may find my way to Tunisia, then I will be able to get into a camp and they will cater for the other expenses including accommodation and meals, among others things. This is the relationship that is created by taekwondo, as we are all friends despite competing against each other,” he said. The third Dan black belt artist said there were great chances of him getting a podium finish, but all depended on the training programme. He said he would be happy if he could secure a sponsor for the ticket as it costs around E10 000.

“We have now moved past the stage of participating like it used to happen in the past. We would go to international tournaments and got knocked out in the first round. Now we are challenging for honours. Camps like the one lined up in Tunisia help you fight against different people who are at different levels,” he added.Maziya said he had learnt a lot from the past two World Championships he had attended. He competed in the 2015 and 2017 World Championships. Maziya is currently a Coach for Sejong Lions based in Mbabane.
