MBABANE – With a game to go, ‘giant slayers’ Tambankulu Callies are guaranteed E100 000 after beating ‘big guns’ in the race for the fifth spot.

As the top four made up of Royal Leopard, Mbabane Highlanders, Mbabane Swallows and Young Buffaloes was confirmed over two weeks ago; the rest of the teams, especially those in mid-table, were hoping to finish just behind ‘the big boys’. Callies beat relegated Malanti Chiefs by 3-2 this past weekend to secure the fifth place. Their 44-point tally will now not be matched by their closest challengers, who include sixth-placed Vovovo and giants Manzini Wanderers, who are seventh.

Vovovo and Wanderers, who suffered setbacks against Tambuti and Leopard, are on 40 and 39 points, in that order. They hope to occupy last place for the prize money. A team finishing sixth gets E75 000 while the 10 sides occupying seventh to 16th place are not entitled to any league prize money. Wanderers are classified as one of the ‘Big Three’, alongside Highlanders and Mbabane Swallows. Meanwhile, notable sides that have already missed out on making the top six with a game to spare include two-time champions Green Mamba and Moneni Pirates, who are ninth and 10th, respectively.

Thrilled with their current position, Callies’ Chairman Sithembiso ‘Ngudze’ Mamba said the 19 players would equally share E50 000 of the incentive in appreciation of their hard work. He commended them for achieving the team’s vision and clinging onto the fifth place. In essence, each player will be incentivised with E2 600. “Our mandate at the beginning of the season was to finish the league in the top eight and we got position five.  I’m very happy with their performance and the work of the technical bench. Next season we will be competing for the championship. They will share E50 000 of the prize and the coach has a certain percentage of the package,” Mamba said. Meanwhile, among the top four, Leopard are already guaranteed a minimum of E700 000, as they will not finish outside the top two positions. League runners-up get E500 000. They will also get E200 000 for being first round champions.
