MBABANE – Young Buffaloes goal machine Sandile ‘Saviola’ Gamedze is currently the best sharpshooter in Africa, thanks to 23 goals.

The rankings are based on goals scored in the different leagues across the continent. The quicksilver forward has surpassed Mbabane Highlanders’ lethal striker Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa, who was leading the pack going into last week’s fixture. ‘Saviola’ scored a hat trick on Sunday against Denver Sundowns at Mayaluka Stadium, while ‘Sikhali’ was also on target in the aborted game against Malanti Chiefs at KaLanga Technical Centre. The latter’s strike has since been cancelled. Gamedze has now equalled the number of goals that were scored by last season’s top goalscorer teammate Phiwayinkosi ‘Silwabelwabe’ Dlamini, who scored 23 goals to take the gong for being the top scorer.

Coming closer to home, according to information sourced from COSAFA.com, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns deadly forward Peter Shalulile has scored 22 goals, a goal behind Gamedze. Right behind Shalulile’s heels is Katleho Makateng from Lesotho with 20 goals. Gamedze said he was not aware that he was topping the African strikers’ charts on the continental Leagues top scorers. “I am very happy to be the number one striker with 23 goals in Africa; this is through hard work and listening to the technical bench, and I must say that I am deeply surprised about what you are saying,” Gamedze said.

He thanked his teammates, saying without them he would not have achieved the number of goals that he had scored so far in the season. Meanwhile, Mbabane Swallows assistant coach and physical trainer Siyabonga Bhembe, said what Gamedze had achieved was  good for the country as it showed that  Eswatini boasted of good quality players. “This is good for the boy, his club and the country, my wish and prayer is to see him getting an opportunity to play outside the country to show the world that in Eswatini we do have good strikers,” Bhembe said.
He said the Sihlangu forward should continue working hard and be consistent. “Maybe one day he will get a chance to sign for a team outside the country,” he said.
