E35 000 FOR 14-YR-OLD SWIMMING SENSATION HAYLEY

MBABANE – Her sensational performance in the CANA Zone IV Swimming Championships in Lusaka, Zambia a fortnight ago earned Hayley Hoy E35 000.

The 14-year-old won three gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the games held from April 14 to 18 2022. They money she earned is from the government’s financial incentives which are a token of appreciation for international outstanding performance. These rewards are based on a laid down policy developed by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, through the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC), which all sporting associations are aware of.  Hoy earned E8 000 for each gold; E5 000 for the silver; and E6 000 for the two bronze medals.

The cash incentive was presented by the Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga in the presence of Principal Secretary (PS) Prince Mlayeto, ESRC Board Chairman Celucolo ‘Dino’ Dlamini, ESRC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Darius Dlomo and her parents. The Swim Lab Swimming club swimmer said she was grateful for her performance, as she loved swimming a lot. She said she was happy with her performance in Zambia and she hoped to do even better in the next competitions. “There are a number of international competitions coming and I have to keep on training to perform even better. Thanks to the minister for the support and it encourages us to work even harder,” she said.

Another biggest winner in the pool was 11-year-old Luca Fraser, who took home E15 000 after coming back home with three silver medals from three events. These were 50m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke and the 100m breaststroke. The two swimmers had been oustanding in the country’s competitions. They were also part of the four swimmers that were named among the best during the swimming national championships. They have been breaking records in the past five years. In the seniors, Simanga Dlamini also form Swim Lab received E3 000 for winning a bronze medal in the 3km Open Water Swim Challenge.

Minister of Sports, Bulunga before presenting the incentives to the athletes said with these tokens of appreciation, he hoped that the athletes would continue to work harder to break more barriers in sport and achieve all their dreams. “Our commitment as a ministry to you and the entire sporting fraternity is that we will continue to create an enabling environment for sport as an industry to thrive in Eswatini. Once again, I wish to congratulate you for your brilliant efforts,” he said.
