MBABANE – Congratulations are in order for the Eswatini Boxing Association (EBA) which is celebrating two silver and four bronze medals from Mozambique.

The country’s boxers won during the AFBC Zone 4 Elite Boxing Championships held in Mozambique over the weekend including Zweli Dlamini and Princess Dlamini. The duo clinched silver. The bronze medalists are Thabiso Dlamini, Sifiso Ngwenya, Sabelo Lukhele and Mancoba Dlamini. Ahead of the championships, EBA sent  the high performance team to South Africa, where they were trained in various aspects in preparation for their competition, thanks to the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) that funded their trip to the tune of E50 000. The boxers’ achievements follow that of the Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA), which also hauled in 10 medals in Zambia last week.

EBA President Webster Lukhele said the championships helped to gauge the local boxers ahead of the Commonwealth Games billed for Birmingham in July. Lukhele noted the high competition presented by boxers from other countries and encouraged the locals to invest more in their training in order to match or even exceed international standards. “The EBA is proud to have a lady representing Eswatini in the seniors and managed to bring home a silver medal. This is our second silver medal following that of Veliswa Magaya from Region V. Our boxers need to multiply their training effort because their opponents are fulltime boxers, while it’s a part-time sport for us,” Lukhele said. He further said EBA was planning to host two tournaments that will also feature boxers from Mozambique and South Africa.
