MBABANE – The Premier League of Eswatini’s (PLE) newly-employed Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kenneth Makhanya, is currently working without a contract.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns manager was unveiled as the new PLE CEO a fortnight ago, just a day before the organisation’s Special Meeting which was held at Sigwaca House. He commenced his duties on April Fool’s Day - last Friday. PLE Chairman Mark Carmichael confirmed that the CEO was in office without an employment contract, as they were busy working on it as an organisation. He said by evening today they would be done with Makhanya’s contract. “This is not an easy thing to do, but I can promise you that by tomorrow after our monthly meeting, we will be done with the contract of the CEO,” Carmichael said.

When asked about how they would tie Makhanya to the organisation, the chairman said the contract would be around two years. “He should be given at least a two-year contract, but as I have said, everything will be sorted after our monthly meeting,” he clarified. Meanwhile, Makhanya also confirmed that he was in office without the employment contract, but was working under what is called a Heads of Agreement. “It’s true that I still don’t have the contract with me, we are using the Heads of Agreement which is in place. The contract will replace the Heads of Agreement,” he said.

non-binding

A ‘Heads of Agreement’ is an initial, non-binding document that establishes the basic framework for a partnership or transaction, it is the first step towards creating a formal deal, and due to its tentative nature, can often be renegotiated. He further said that the issue of the contract could not just be drafted by the chairman alone, as a lot of stakeholders needed to be consulted.
