MBABANE – A disastrous showing for Royal Leopard.

This is after the police ensemble lost their last game of the TOTALEnergies CAF Confederation Cup which was played at Mbombela Stadium yesterday. The Edwin Matsebula-led charges were condemned to a 2-0 defeat by JS Saoura of Algeria, and 4-0 on aggregate following a 2-0 away loss in the reverse fixture. Yesterday’s results, which were their last game of the continental tournament, meant they had finished the tournament without a win or a point. They, however, will get about E4.2 million, which is a participation fee for reaching the Group stages.

In their opening group B first game, they played on February 20, 2021 in Algeria; they lost 2-0 before being humiliated by Orlando Pirates’ 6-2 on February 27 at Mbombela Stadium. On March 6 this year, things became worse as they lost 2-1 against Libya Al-Ittihad. Hopes to turn things around were dashed when they were hammered 3-0 by Pirates in the second leg at Orlando Stadium which was played on March 13. The home side were close to earning their first point, but lost 3-2 conceding a last minute goal to Libyan team.

The away game was played on March 20. Yesterday was a chance to atleast to redeem themselves by claiming maximum point or atleast getting a point, it was not to be as they conceded two goals in the 51st and 54th minute. Ismail Saad opened the scorers chart, after unleashing a volley from a short corner, beating Ncamiso ‘Mbhonyo’ Dlamini across the goalposts.
Oussama Bellatrenche made it 2-0 after finishing from a Lahmri rebound on close range. Now the focus is back on the league for Royal Leopard as they take on Vovovo on Wednesday.
